March 12, 2003

This information is from and e-mail sent to me by Chi-Chi, and provides us all with the current details of our friend's children.  Best wishes to Jake, Stacy and Cyrus, and all of the Rasmusens, Rowlands, and Wolf families!  The families have the kid's best interests at heart.

"It's good to hear from you and that people are still concerned about the kids.   There have been some changes in where Cyrus lives and soon where Jake will live.

First, Cyrus has gone to be with a foster family who have a little 7 year old boy and who really wanted another boy.  Ira and Julia were advised by professionals that their home situation was not the best for Cyrus since they have a houseful of young children and are not able to give Cyrus as much intense parenting, as he truly needs right now.  I know it was the hardest decision that they ever had to make, and it was Julia that found and organized Cyrus's new home.  He is out here in Surrey, closer to us, mom and dad and we see him often.  He is going to Sunday school with my children and Stacy, and seems very happy where he is.  He lives on a large farm and has been given a calf to help raise!

Jake is going to live with a cousin of ours in Langely, also on a farm, this Friday or Saturday.  While he did make friends at school he was really bored at home with no one to play with as he had here with Rhys and up at Whistler.  We were not able to take him, since we have Stacy, and plan to keep her.  Jake seems to be looking forward to going, as my cousin has three teenage boys with similar interests to Jake.   They are all active and have responsibilities on the farm as well.  Jake is going to go to a middle school which will allow him to make friends during the rest of this year and stay with them until grade ten. The high school is right across the street from his new home.  We will still see him often since he will come to visit us and mom and dad on weekends.

Stacy is doing great.  She still does piano with my kids and she is doing gymnastics every week.  Right now she is also taking an art class on Tuesdays.  We have been skiing up on the local mts and she seemed a bit nervous on the way up.  Partly because she hasn't skied in two years I think.  She took two turns on her new skis and she was away.  No problems at all!

I hope this helps with some of the rumors.  In general things are going well for all the kids in terms of there physical well being.  If you want to put this out on the website I think it would be okay.  There may still be some people who choose see things their own way and we can't do anything about that, but we know how things are and that's what is important to us."

Some changes, but also great opportunities for new experiences, and the kids are closer to each other!

Status of the Kids - Latest news :-)))))

07/23/2002 Kid Updates -

I wanted to share with everyone excerpts of an email from Chi-Chi, as she packs up to head off camping to Hornby Island, for the next ten days.   Jakob, Stacy and Cyrus are going to spend this time with their Uncle Bernie, during this time, and they will be going to OK Falls for a few days to stay with friends.   Chi-Chi and Bob felt it would be difficult to take 6 kids camping for 10 days, and the kids are happy to spend time with Bernie.

Cyrus has had his cast off a week ago, and other than no trampolines or jumping off things the Dr. has said he is good to go!!  He loves to run, and has adopted the practice of running down the alley ahead of the car, when Chi-Chi returns home from anywhere.  It has become a tradition, Chi-Chi stops the car about 80 yards from the driveway, and all the kids bail out, and run home.  This is great news!!

The families got together on Saturday to celebrate Stacy's birthday!  HAPPY BIRTHDAY Stacy!!  She invited a friend from school that she has got to know through Chi-Chi's son Rhys, and all the kids went to see "Crocodile Hunter".  Then home for hot dogs, treasure hunt, and ice-cream cake.  The kids grandparents, Omi and Opa were also there, and everyone had a great time!

Chi-Chi and Bob, Bernie and Tanya, and Ira and Julia have been watching the behavior of the kids very closely.  The realities of absorbing Jakob, Stacy and Cyrus into one family unit have lead them and others to believe that the kids can be divided across the three families.  These folks are very close, and spend alot of time together as one family unit, so it is really just a Monday to Friday thing.

The family has worked out a logical choice by using the ages of the kids, to determine the family group, so Cyrus will move in with Ira and Julius, and their three daughters.  Stacy will stay with Chi-Chi and Bob, and Jakob will live with Bernie and Tanya.

The children themselves told the Psychologist that they couldn't see any single family dealing with six kids.  Chi-Chi admits that because the families are all so close, that they can make this work, and each family can focus on doing the best they can for each kid.

Chi-Chi mentions that Kim's sister Debbie is arriving in early August and may also want to fit into the scheme of things.

Chi-Chi reports that the kids are doing well, and are getting used to their new routines.  They are not really focusing on what has happened to them, and do not show signs of grief yet.  This is not unusual, and the professionals expect this to take awhile, although it could happen at any time, which is why everyone is working so hard to ensure the kids stay busy, and involved with all of their cousins...

Best wishes for a great summer holidays...

06/25/2002 Pictures of the kids, by Uncle Bob!!  They look great, and we all miss them!!  Use this link to send an email message to them.                                         mailto:rasmusens@shaw.ca

Stacy and Cyrus are both mobile, although in casts.  This week the Dr.'s plan on removing the bone pins, and replacing the casts with walking ones.   Stacy is practically running, and doing very well physically, this includes climbing the school's "Jungle Jim".  Cyrus is looking at 4 more weeks of a walking cast, which has been tested in "running" mode.  Uncle Ira and Aunt Julia's daughter Claire, and Cyrus are quickly becoming good buddies, as Cyrus hasn't enjoyed many opportunities to "play" with kids his own age.

Through ICBC the kids, and Chi-Chi are receiving daily home help, which is sometimes "debatable", although Chi-Chi appreciates the extra help.   Her day consists of managing the kids, the doctors, the families activities, and updating all of us.  If Chi-Chi misses calling you back, it is probable that she has taken the kids off to an appointment.  Her day is very busy, but all is well.   If you miss her, try again, as she is very busy!!

Contrary to recent CBC Radio reports, Chi-Chi and Bob remain foster parents to the three kids, with the support of Bernie and Tanya, Ira and Julia, and both sets of GrandParents.  Kim's Parents stay in touch with Chi-Chi, and try to visit at least once per week.  The kids have been to visit the Wolfe's as well.

Jakob is adjusting well to his new routines, making friends and doing well at school.  Generally, the kids are moving forward, but they talk about their parents, Whistler and other details in present tense, which indicates they are having difficulty realizing and understanding the changes.  They are receiving assistance, and all are physically, well!!  This is tremendous, as many of us remember the extent of their injuries, and traumatic change in their lives.

They enjoyed a great Father's Day BBQ at Bernie's and Tanya's, and all of the kids had a great time.  The Rowlands are keeping them as busy as possible, while minding their recovery.

Because the kids, are wards of the state, in foster care with Chi-Chi and Bob, many of the details of their new life generate news.  It is important that we all realize some of what we hear is simply not true, and is "sensationalized".  The family has been approached about a televised news report being produced focusing on the children and their recovery, only.  The purpose of this will be to provide true information, and generate funds, for their Trust Fund.

Because the kids, are wards of the state, the Public Trustee is involved in all aspect's of their new life.  This is why it has taken time to create, and organize the appropriate legal Trust Fund for the kids "well-being", moving forward.

The family has established a good working relationship with the Public Trustee, and Child Care Services, and have all worked very hard at assisting and maintaining the kids recovery.

It is perhaps time to congratulate and thank the families.   It is certainly time for friends to start and establish plans and efforts to assist the kids, as these new moments like "summer holidays" begin to take shape.

We are working on several plans to create Fund-Raising for the Trust Fund, and ask for your ideas and inputs, as we move into this stage.  All of us are still reeling from this tragedy.  Let us work together, to channel our loss, sadness and sorrow, to assist these great kids with their future!

Celebration of Life Details have been relocated to the Memorial page.

We raised $1,024.63 in donations from this event, which included Buffalo Bill's.   The bill for Millennium Place has been paid, and we have $$703.63, in Trust for the children.

Elwyn's Images

The "Silent Auction" of Elwyn's Images included 51 images.  The display of the pictures was very impressive, and took over a considerable amount of space across from the main bar at Bill's.  Many friends "bid" on these images.

The approximate total of the bids is currently $8,300!!!

Ongoing conversations with Elwyn's family, suggest that they are very busy, and focused on working with Cyrus, Stacy, and Jakob as we all move ahead.  This leaves the tasks of collecting, sorting, filing, and eventually digitally scanning Elwyn's images, to our Whistler Friends Group.

Due to this early success of the "Silent Auction", it is apparent that these images have value.  We believe that Elwyn's Olympic, Whistler and other scene images have commercial value.  This also includes all images of musicians, although these images need to be managed differently.

Our local Whistler Friends Group, requests that all images of Elwyn's be reported.   As of 05/14/02, we have the 51 "Prints" from the Silent Auction in safe storage, as we plan our next steps.  We have not yet had a chance to begin our collecting and sorting process, so we do not know, what negatives are available to us.   We would like to ask for assistance, as we move into this phase.

We have been in touch and are developing a proposal for a showing of Elwyn's images in July.  We are meeting with the Millennium Place administration this week to plan for this.  At this stage, we might need to use the existing images, we have, until we can begin the cataloging process.

We have been in touch with ABC PhotoColour Products, in Vancouver, in relation to their Scanning, and Print Copy Services.  A meeting will be planned, to obtain their technical opinion on existing image scanning, and creating registered "prints" from negatives, and the existing print images.  Once we have an idea of costs, we can begin to sell prints of Elwyn's images, with the proceeds going to the Trust Fund.

Older News -

Sunday May 12th was Mother's Day - Uncle Ira reports that the children enjoyed a special moment in remembrance.  Aunt Tanya, suggested they use a helium balloon, to take up a note.  The kids wrote notes, and the balloon was released.

Cyrus and Stacy are both improving, and had arm casts removed.  Cyrus's leg cast was upgraded to fiberglass, so he is more mobile, and the cast waterproof.

The kids are well, but starting to express their feelings about the accident.  I am sure it is a challenging time for Chi-chi and Bob, and family, as this adjustment continues.

April 28th, Aunt Chi-chi, reports that her and Bob are preparing to take the kids, into their home, this week.  It could be Wednesday or Thursday.  The kids, may be transferred to Surrey Memorial for a few days, to provide more preparation time.  Bob and Chi-chi have been out shopping for bunks beds, as Jakob and Cyrus will be sharing their son Rhys's bedroom.  Stacy will be sharing their daughter Lydia's room.  Both Stacy and Cyrus will be in wheelchairs for up to 6 weeks.

Kim's sister "Aunt Debbie", has been taking Stacy food to the hospital, since she doesn't like the hospital food.  Both children's spirits are improving, and Cyrus is very active in the playroom.  They have a befriended a Doctor, who resembles "Patch Adams", and the kids enjoy his clown-like behavior.

Chi-chi thanks everyone who attended the service, and provided the families with support.

Uncle Bernie and Aunt Tanya are hoping to attend Sunday with Jakob!  Aunt Chi-chi is hoping to bring Jakob for a visit Thursday with Bob, so he can participate in an event at Myrtle Philips, Jakob's Whistler school.

Donations for the children can be made "in trust", through the legal firm which has been retained to establish the trust fund.  This information will be available over the next 24 hrs.

Cyrus-

Cyrus learned to read with Aunt Tanya yesterday.  "He is such an eager Beaver", writes Tanya.  "He can identify the words with A, and when Tanya stops on a word, she expects him to read, he has to figure it out.  They read 4-5 books, and Cyrus didn't want to stop.  He read again for Uncle Bernie, when he arrived to visit.

Stacy-

Both Stacy and Cyrus went to the playroom!!!  Cyrus cashed in big time at picture Bingo, winning 3 times.  He won a hat, a compass, and a really cool straw that is a pair of sunglasses that you put together and the liquid goes around his ears, and eyes before he drinks it.  Stacy had to have a try also!

"Stacy won a bracelet and did excellent for her first day in a wheel chair"

Current events-

Stacy has had a glass of juice, for the first time, and tonight she will have real food!!  Alright Stacy :-)))

Cyrus has had ice cream, and enjoyed a great visit with Uncle Ira last night.

Aunt Chi-Chi reports that these are huge leaps for both kids, and everyone close to the hospital care, are very pleased.

Our intention is not to report on the extent of their injuries.  We will try to provide the day to day status, improvements, and strength.

Jakob-

Jake - has gone to the hospital with his grand parents for the first time to-day to visit.  He is living with Elwyn's sister Chi-Chi, and husband Bob Rasmusens in Surrey.  Their phone number is 604.582.9038.

Although your calls are appreciated, Chi-Chi requests callers ask for her.  She would like to learn who is calling, introduce herself, explain about Jakob, and what is currently going on with him.  Jakob is keeping busy with his grandmother, and the other children, and his spirits are good.
